As Lebanon grapples with escalating conflict and humanitarian challenges, the plight of displaced families has become increasingly dire. With reports indicating that over 1.2 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to intensified hostilities, calls for urgent intervention and support are growing louder. The United Nations Refugee Agency has emphasized the need for immediate action to address the escalating crisis and safeguard the rights and well-being of affected populations.
Lebanon is currently facing a potential humanitarian catastrophe, warned officials from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as Israel’s prolonged bombardment and ground invasion intensify. Karolina Lindholm Billing, the UNHCR’s Lebanon representative, highlighted that the impact of military actions has been felt nationwide—from the southern regions to the capital, Beirut, and even northern areas—affecting countless civilians.
Since the start of intensified attacks in early March, more than 1.2 million individuals have been displaced, according to UN reports. Lindholm Billing expressed concern over the deteriorating situation, communicating that the risk of a humanitarian disaster is becoming increasingly real. As displacement figures surge, Lebanon’s capacity to provide adequate shelter is rapidly dwindling. She noted the unfortunate reality that many families, seeking refuge in central Beirut, experienced strikes in densely populated neighborhoods that they had turned to for safety.
The recent escalation in violence was triggered after Hezbollah responded to the February 28 assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, launching rockets into Israeli territory. In retaliation, the Israeli military has conducted extensive air and ground operations throughout Lebanon, accompanied by mass forced displacement orders targeting both southern areas and suburbs of Beirut.
The Israeli military announced further airstrikes on Beirut while continuing to issue displacement orders for neighborhoods like Haret Hreik and Burj al-Barajneh. In response to these aggressive actions, Hezbollah has maintained its rocket fire into northern Israel and vowed to continue resisting what it calls an occupation. Lebanese resilience is evident, as Hezbollah’s leader Naim Qassem reiterated the group’s determination to confront ongoing aggression.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to widen military operations and extend ground incursions into Lebanon, establishing what he termed as “a larger buffer zone” in Lebanese territory. Human rights organizations have raised significant alarms over these developments, warning that preventing civilians from returning home constitutes forced displacement, which is a serious violation of international law.
Rights group Human Rights Watch cautioned that the tactics employed by Israel reflect grave risks of forced evacuations, emphasizing that such actions may amount to war crimes. The humanitarian implications are profoundly alarming, as the destruction of civilian homes and critical infrastructure, particularly bridges crucial for connectivity, exacerbates the isolation of affected communities in southern Lebanon.
During a recent briefing, Lindholm Billing underscored the seriousness of these infrastructural losses, stating that damaged bridges in the south have hindered access to vital resources, affecting over 150,000 individuals and severely limiting humanitarian assistance.
Reports from the region indicate that evacuation orders are causing significant panic among residents, particularly in areas previously deemed safe, further complicating the Lebanese government’s efforts to respond to the rapidly growing humanitarian crisis. Al-Jazeera correspondent Obaida Hitto affirmed that the disruptions, including the destruction of bridges over the Litani River, profoundly restrict the ability of families to find safety, presenting monumental challenges for the Lebanese authorities attempting to manage this urgent situation.
The ongoing conflict and its repercussions mark a critical juncture for Lebanon, highlighting the necessity for international solidarity and support to alleviate the suffering of displaced families and restore stability in the region.
