Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has expressed deep concern regarding a recent escalation of Israeli military operations across southern Lebanon. In a significant call for international awareness, Salam urged world leaders to advocate for Israel’s adherence to a ceasefire agreement established in November with the Lebanese political and military group, Hezbollah. This appeal comes at a crucial moment as Lebanon approaches municipal elections scheduled for Saturday in its southern districts.
According to Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA), Israeli military actions have targeted multiple locations, including a building in Toul, situated in the Nabatieh governorate. The Israeli army had issued a notification for residents to evacuate areas surrounding these targeted sites, which it claims are associated with Hezbollah activities.
Further reports from Lebanese media indicate that Israeli bombardments have also occurred in the towns of Soujod, Touline, Sawanna, and across the Rihan Mountain region, intensifying local anxieties as election day looms. The anticipated electoral contests are likely to see a strong presence from Hezbollah and its coalition partners, raising concerns about the safety of voters, particularly in border towns still affected by the legacy of Israeli occupation.
Salam’s office released a statement emphasizing that such military actions will not undermine Lebanon’s commitment to conducting the elections as planned. The statement highlighted the government’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens amidst these challenges.
As outlined in the fundamentals of the November ceasefire, Hezbollah was expected to retreat north of the Litani River and dismantle military assets situated to the south of that line. Conversely, Israel committed to withdrawing its forces entirely from Lebanese territory but has maintained a military presence in select areas, citing strategic imperatives.
The ceasefire agreement is rooted in a United Nations Security Council resolution mandating that only Lebanese armed forces and UN peacekeepers possess weapons in southern Lebanon, with an emphasis on the disarmament of non-state actors.
In its recent military operations, Israel reported targeting Hezbollah sites, claiming to have eliminated one fighter in the southern town of Rab el-Thalathine. The NNA characterized these Israeli strikes as among the most intense witnessed since the ceasefire’s enactment, prompting a heightened state of alert among Lebanon’s southern communities.
As this situation unfolds, the attention of both local and global communities remains focused on the implications for regional stability and the upcoming elections in Lebanon.
