Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has reiterated the kingdom’s steadfast opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal regarding the relocation of Palestinians from Gaza to other countries, including Jordan and Egypt. In a recent interview with ZezapTV, Safadi emphasized that Jordan maintains a consistent position on this matter, underscoring the necessity of a just and lasting peace in the region that respects the rights of the Palestinian people.
Safadi’s remarks follow a meeting between King Abdullah II and President Trump at the White House, during which Trump reaffirmed his controversial plan to assume control of the Gaza Strip, an initiative criticized by many as tantamount to ethnic cleansing. Safadi firmly stated that “the Palestinians cannot be transferred to Egypt, Jordan, or any Arab state,” reinforcing Jordan’s commitment to the principle of a two-state solution that ensures the Palestinian right to self-determination on their ancestral lands.
Both Jordan and Egypt have collectively distanced themselves from any arrangement to accept forcibly displaced Palestinians, emphasizing their unwavering support for Palestinian rights. The Palestinian Authority, Hamas, and several other Arab nations have rallied together in opposition to Trump’s plan. Notably, China has voiced support for the Palestinians, asserting that “Gaza belongs to Palestinians.”
During the meeting, King Abdullah tactfully refrained from overtly contradicting Trump, hinting instead at an alternative plan that Egypt is expected to unveil soon. While discussing the possibility of Jordan accepting refugees from Gaza, the king expressed his intent to act in the best interests of his country while also pledging to facilitate medical assistance for 2,000 Palestinian children in need of treatment.
Jordan’s demographic landscape includes over 2 million Palestinian refugees, representing a significant portion of its 11 million residents. In light of these dynamics, Safadi announced that Arab states are devising plans aimed at rebuilding Gaza without necessitating the relocation of its people, a proposal that will be released once fully developed.
Critics of Trump’s Gaza vision argue that it appears detached from the realities faced by the Palestinian people, particularly given their enduring connection to the land. The notion of transforming Gaza into a resort-like area fails to acknowledge the historical and ongoing challenges that Palestinians confront, including the pressures stemming from sustained occupation and conflict.
As discussions unfold, Jordan’s commitment to a principled, rights-based approach remains a focal point, emphasizing the need for solutions that honor the dignity and aspirations of the Palestinian people.
