Jannik Sinner, currently ranked as the world number one in men’s tennis, reached a resolution with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) following a protracted doping controversy. This development comes after Sinner faced two positive drug tests for traces of clostebol, a banned substance, in March of last year. Under the terms of the settlement, Sinner has accepted a three-month suspension from professional tennis, acknowledging “partial responsibility” for oversights involving his support team that contributed to the situation.
The suspension will last from February 9 to May 4, allowing Sinner the opportunity to participate in the prestigious French Open at Roland Garros, which is set to begin on May 25. In addressing the issue, Sinner clarified that WADA acknowledged he possessed no intention of cheating nor derived any unfair advantage from the substance. He explained that the clostebol had inadvertently entered his system through a treatment administered by his physiotherapist, who utilized a spray containing the substance for a cut prior to offering massage and sports therapy.
“This case had been hanging over me now for nearly a year and the process still had a long time to run with a decision maybe only at the end of the year,” Sinner remarked in a statement. He emphasized his understanding of the importance of WADA’s stringent regulations in safeguarding the integrity of sport, reaffirming his acceptance of the sanctions imposed.
WADA, for its part, conceded that Sinner did not engage in intentional doping. Nonetheless, they underscored the expectation that athletes are accountable for the actions of their entourage. This agreement has led WADA to withdraw its appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which had been scheduled to adjudicate the case in April.
Moreover, the settlement enables Sinner to compete in the upcoming Rome Open, a key clay-court event, just after the end of his suspension. This tournament serves as a strategic opportunity for Sinner to perform before his home crowd and to prepare for the challenges of the French Open.
