Israeli-Russian academic Elizabeth Tsurkov has been released from captivity in Iraq after spending more than two years held by an armed group. US President Donald Trump announced her release, providing an update on her status and expressing his commitment to demanding justice for all hostages.

Tsurkov, a student at Princeton University, had been accused of espionage during her time in Iraq, where she was conducting academic research when she disappeared in March 2023. Subsequent investigations confirmed that she was abducted by Kata’ib Hezbollah, a group distinct from the Lebanese Hezbollah, yet part of Iraq’s security framework linked to the Popular Mobilisation Forces, which is predominantly Shia and includes sectors backed by Iran.

Trump’s announcement highlighted that Tsurkov is presently safe and residing at the American Embassy in Iraq. He noted the emotional toll of her captivity, as well as his continued push for justice for those still held against their will, including references to the captives in Gaza. Tsurkov’s case remained confidential for several months until the Israeli Prime Minister’s office publicized her abduction in July 2023, attributing responsibility for her safety to the Iraqi government.

Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, confirmed Tsurkov’s release while emphasizing Iraq’s commitment to the rule of law and the safety of all individuals within its borders. Notably, Tsurkov holds both Israeli and Russian citizenship, having entered Iraq using her Russian travel documents.

In November 2023, Iraqi state media aired footage in which Tsurkov appeared to confess to working for both Mossad and the CIA, claims her family vehemently contested, describing them as coerced statements. While the particulars surrounding her release remain somewhat nebulous, discussions between the US and Iraqi governments regarding her situation have been reported, highlighting the delicate nature of international relations.

Following the announcement, Tsurkov’s sister expressed profound relief and gratitude, noting the emotional distress endured over the 903 days of her sister’s captivity. Her family extends their gratitude to President Trump and his Special Envoy, Adam Boehler, for their efforts in securing her release.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, acknowledging the intense efforts to bring Tsurkov home, praised the collaborative work that led to the successful conclusion of her case. As the situation continues to unfold, both nations express commitment to maintaining diplomatic dialogue and enhancing safety for all involved.
