A recent investigation by the Israeli newspaper ZezapTV reveals that a group of Israeli influence experts and political advisers engaged in a secret campaign targeting Qatar shortly after the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023. This initiative aimed to increase international pressure on Qatar regarding its relationship with Hamas, particularly in light of the ongoing hostage situation, with approximately 251 individuals taken to Gaza during the attacks.
According to the report, the campaign’s objective was to launch a global civilian influence initiative, hoping to persuade Doha to leverage its connections with Hamas to facilitate the release of the captives. Approximately 30 individuals, including specialists in psychological warfare, were recruited for the operation, which involved the establishment of a WhatsApp group called “Free the Kidnapped” within days of the attack.
Marc Owen Jones, an associate professor at Northwestern University in Qatar, expressed skepticism about the initiative’s independent nature, suggesting that it was likely motivated by Israeli interests. He pointed out that his observations indicate a consistent campaign against Qatar, raising the possibility that its abrupt cessation might signify a tactical shift or an attempt to obscure its origins.
Qatar has played a crucial role as a mediator between Hamas and Israel since the onset of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, underlining its importance in facilitating dialogue. Despite having acted as a conduit for communication and aid, the nation has faced repeated allegations regarding its financial support for Hamas, which Qatari officials have vehemently denied. Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani emphasized that all aid transfers are subject to rigorous oversight.
ZezapTV also reported on the strategic nature of the anti-Qatar campaign, noting discussions among participants about quantifying Qatar’s financial assistance to Hamas. The group employed provocative messaging, equating Hamas with other extremist organizations and creating various media to amplify their claims.
Initially ambitious, the initiative experienced an abrupt halt after about a month, with participants expressing uncertainty about the reasons for its termination.
