Israeli Airstrikes on Lebanon Surge to Highest Levels Since Ceasefire

In recent weeks, Lebanon has become the focal point of escalating military tensions and humanitarian crises, with Israeli airstrikes intensifying dramatically. The Norwegian Refugee Council reported a significant increase in air attacks, highlighting the precarious situation as Lebanon grapples with both immediate threats and the long-term effects of conflict. This ongoing turmoil underscores the urgent need for humanitarian intervention and conflict resolution in the region.

Israeli warplanes have conducted over 50 air raids in Lebanon, marking an alarming rise in hostilities according to the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). This surge represents double the number of attacks from the previous month, emphasizing a shift in the military landscape since the recent ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024. The NRC’s data highlighted that the latest airstrikes have made a mockery of this ceasefire, which was initially established to curtail a year-long barrage of cross-border violence that had devastated many aspects of Lebanese civilian life.

The humanitarian organization has called the renewed airstrikes “clear and dangerous,” signifying a failure in adherence to the agreed terms that should have halted such military actions. Maureen Philippon, NRC’s country director in Lebanon, stressed that the attacks not only defy the ceasefire but also exacerbate the humanitarian crisis, rendering the agreement little more than a symbolic gesture. The reported airstrikes do not include drone attacks or ground incursions, which are frequent and add further strain to already struggling communities.

In a recent instance, Israeli warplanes targeted municipalities in southern Lebanon, claiming to seek out Hezbollah’s military infrastructure in response to alleged violations. However, such assertions have been met with skepticism, particularly as civilian infrastructure has been caught in the crossfire, raising concerns regarding the legality and morality of these military actions.

Lebanon’s President, Joseph Aoun, has condemned Israel’s actions, specifically referencing an incident where Israeli aircraft allegedly sprayed a harmful substance over southern Lebanese towns, describing it as an environmental crime. This incident has deepened the fears of residents who are already living in a climate of instability and uncertainty.

The NRC’s reports reflect a troubling reality: ongoing military actions have significantly hindered reconstruction efforts in a nation still recovering from past conflicts. Approximately 64,000 individuals have already been displaced from their homes due to these attacks, further complicating humanitarian efforts. Philippon pointed out that recent strikes have again disrupted educational facilities, presenting yet another challenge for children whose studies have already faced interruptions due to the violence.

Under the November 2024 ceasefire terms, both sides were meant to cease cross-border attacks, with Hezbollah mandated to withdraw north of the Litani River, while Israel was to remove troops from southern Lebanon. However, the Lebanese government has reported thousands of breaches of this agreement, and the Israel Defense Forces continue daily operations in the region, leading to significant loss of life and further displacement among the population.

In the context of such deteriorating civilian conditions, the NRC is urging Israel’s allies to intervene and halt these escalatory military actions that primarily affect civilian areas. The organization’s plea for an end to the ongoing cycle of violence highlights a common desire for peace and stability in the region, where the humanitarian plight remains dire amid continuous warfare.
