Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun has articulated his country’s aspiration for peace with Israel while clarifying that normalization of relations is not on Lebanon’s agenda as he addressed ongoing tensions in the region. This statement coincided with reports from Lebanese health authorities indicating the tragic loss of a life due to an Israeli air strike in the southern part of the country. The drone attack, which occurred in the Nabatieh district, also resulted in injuries to five others, highlighting the persistent volatility affecting the region.
Such incidents point to a continued pattern of Israeli strikes against specific sites within Lebanon, particularly in the southern areas, despite an agreed ceasefire reached on November 27 between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah. The terms of this truce mandated Hezbollah’s withdrawal north of the Litani River—approximately 30 kilometers from the Israeli border—while Israel was expected to fully withdraw its troops, leaving only the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeeping forces in the vicinity. Nonetheless, Israel continues to maintain a presence in five strategically significant locations within southern Lebanon.
In his remarks, President Aoun emphasized Lebanon’s desire for peaceful coexistence with Israel but firmly rejected the notion of normalization, a topic recently raised by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar. Aoun noted that peace, in Lebanon’s context, equates to the cessation of hostilities, which remains the primary focus at this juncture. He reiterated a call for Israel to withdraw fully from Lebanese territory, underscoring Lebanon’s commitment to sovereignty.
Amid discussions regarding arms regulation, Aoun also referred to Lebanon’s aspiration to maintain a sole authority over weaponry within its borders, subtly addressing ongoing U.S. appeals for Hezbollah’s disarmament. However, the militia, which has encountered considerable challenges following ongoing conflicts with Israel, remains resolute in its stance. Hezbollah’s leader, Naim Qassem, asserted that disarming under the specter of Israeli aggression was not a feasible option.
The Israeli military recently confirmed the entry of its troops into southern Lebanon, citing the need to dismantle Hezbollah’s infrastructure, with ongoing apprehension about the group’s resurgence in the region. This escalation was illustrated further by a subsequent drone strike that resulted in additional casualties in the village of al-Mansouri.
As this complex situation unfolds, Lebanon continues to navigate its path towards stability while advocating for peace and security in the region.
