The Israeli military has intensified its operations in the occupied West Bank, leading to mass arrests that have affected numerous Palestinian communities. Reports from the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) and the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, as shared by the Palestinian news agency Wafa, indicate that over 50 Palestinians were apprehended in overnight raids across various regions, including Hebron, Tulkarem, Qalqilya, Nablus, Ramallah, Bethlehem, Jericho, and Tubas.
In a notable incident, Israeli troops reportedly stormed the Majed Abu Sharar School in Dura near Hebron, resulting in the arrests of two students, highlighting the broader implications of the military’s actions on the youth and education sector within these communities. Since the escalation of military activities resumed following a ceasefire in Gaza a month ago, more than 14,500 Palestinians have been detained in the West Bank alone, according to various Palestinian organizations. This figure, however, excludes the significant number of arrests in the Gaza Strip, where estimates suggest thousands have also been detained.
The security measures coincide with Israel’s heightened military offensive in the West Bank, leading to tragic consequences. Reports indicate that at least 62 Palestinians have lost their lives in the last month, alongside the displacement of around 40,000 individuals from camps in Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nur Shams.
Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner general of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, recently described the West Bank as a “battlefield” and expressed concern over the “alarming spillover” effects of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The situation in Nur Shams camp has escalated, with Israeli forces issuing urgent evacuation orders for residents, giving them a mere three hours to leave their homes before planned demolitions, which led many families to evacuate with only the barest of essentials.
The Israeli military’s actions have been characterized by the Palestinian Authority (PA) as a continuation of a strategy aimed at genocide, displacement, and annexation. Furthermore, the PA condemned the obstruction of ambulances by Israeli forces, which they assert constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law.
As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, the PA has raised concerns about potential restrictions on worshippers at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, anticipating increased military presence and limitations that could further affect the community’s spiritual practices. Recent updates indicate that at least 924 Palestinians have been killed, and more than 7,000 injured since the military escalation began, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
In light of these developments, the International Court of Justice’s 2024 ruling declaring Israel’s longstanding occupation illegal underscores the international community’s position advocating for the termination of settlements and reaffirming the rights of the Palestinian people.
