South Korea’s Shin Tae-yong has been relieved of his duties as the head coach of the Indonesian men’s football team, as the country intensifies its efforts to secure qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026. Erick Thohir, the president of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), announced the decision during a press conference, emphasizing the need for stronger leadership within the team.
Thohir articulated that the team requires a coach who can enhance communication and implement strategic plans that align with the players’ capabilities. He stated, “We need a leadership that implements strategies as agreed with the players, communicates better, and implements better programmes for our national team.” Following Shin’s departure, Thohir confirmed that a new coach, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, will be arriving in Indonesia on January 11 to take the helm.
Indonesia is home to a fervent football culture, with millions of fans passionately supporting their national team. Despite its rich footballing history, the nation has made only one World Cup appearance—under Dutch colonial rule in 1938. Since gaining independence in 1945, Indonesia has faced obstacles in returning to the global stage. Currently, the team sits third in their qualifying group after competing in six of the ten scheduled matches, trailing Australia by a single point for the second automatic qualifying spot.
Thohir expressed confidence that the coaching change would not disrupt the team’s momentum, pointing out that many countries often opt for new leadership during the World Cup qualification process. He remarked that the decision to part ways with Shin had been under consideration for several months, but the timing was deemed appropriate given that the team has two and a half months to prepare for upcoming matches. “We still have four matches, and we want to accumulate as many points as possible,” he added.
Shin, who took over coaching duties in 2019, will receive compensation for the remainder of his contract, which runs until 2027. His tenure included a notable moment in November when Indonesia achieved a surprising 2-0 victory against Saudi Arabia, a regional football powerhouse, solidifying the team’s potential in the competitive landscape of Asian football. As Indonesia looks ahead, the PSSI aims to capitalize on this momentum to enhance the national team’s prospects on the world stage.
