Islamabad, Pakistan – The Pakistani government has initiated a series of charges against former Prime Minister Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and numerous Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party members, following recent protests in Islamabad. Among these charges is a notable allegation related to “terrorism,” reflecting the increasing tensions between the government and the PTI party.
The accusations levied against Khan, Bibi, and several PTI members encompass a variety of serious actions, including unlawful assembly, assaults on law enforcement, and contraventions of Section 144, which restricts gatherings exceeding four individuals. In the wake of these events, approximately 1,000 PTI supporters were detained after traveling to Islamabad to respond to Khan’s call for protest against the current government.
Imran Khan, who founded PTI, has been imprisoned since August 2023 and is currently facing numerous legal challenges. His wife, Bushra Bibi, underwent a nine-month incarceration earlier this year before her release in October. The protests drew significant public participation, with demonstrators successfully reaching central Islamabad despite government-imposed roadblocks. Their demands focused on seeking Khan’s release and addressing a broader set of grievances against the government. Bibi emerged as a leading figure in the protest, supported by Ali Amin Gandapur, the PTI chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The situation escalated on Tuesday when paramilitary forces reportedly employed crowd-dispersal measures, further leading to a two-hour operation by law enforcement to clear the area. Despite these actions, many PTI supporters continued to voice their demands. The following morning, the party announced a temporary suspension of the sit-in while claiming that authorities had caused fatalities among protestors, a claim that remains a point of contention.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Planning Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal have vigorously contested the PTI’s claims regarding casualties, asserting that no live ammunition was utilized and that no bodies were reported to local hospitals. Hospital representatives echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that they were not privy to information about any deaths amidst the chaos.
The discrepancies regarding the casualty count highlight the wider implications of the ongoing political unrest. PTI leaders have reported varying figures of fatalities, ranging from ten to 200, while the government insists that misinformation is being propagated for political advantage.
The tensions were further exacerbated by the arrest of journalist Matiullah Jan, known for his critical stance towards Pakistan’s military. Jan had been pursuing investigations regarding the alleged deaths during the protest and was charged with a range of offenses, including accusations of drug trafficking and terrorism.
The political landscape in Pakistan has become increasingly polarized since the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) assumed power in February after PTI declined to form a government despite winning a significant number of National Assembly seats. The PMLN-led coalition has faced persistent opposition from PTI, which has organized multiple protests demanding Khan’s release and contesting the integrity of the electoral process.
