The inaugural World Humanoid Robot Games concluded in Beijing, showcasing more than 500 humanoid robots that engaged in a variety of events ranging from the 100-meter hurdles to martial arts. This unprecedented event drew participation from 280 robotics teams across 16 countries and was held at the National Speed Skating Oval, a venue originally constructed for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Events encompassed a range of competitions including traditional sports such as athletics and basketball, alongside practical applications like medicine categorization and cleaning tasks. The diversity of these events underscores the growing versatility and capabilities of robotic technologies in different spheres.

Eighteen-year-old spectator Chen Ruiyuan expressed optimism about the future of robotics, stating that within the next decade, robots could function on par with humans. Although human athletes may currently hold an advantage, the advancements in robotics displayed during the Games indicate significant potential for future developments.

In a newly introduced five-a-side football event, teams of humanoid robots struggled to navigate the pitch, often colliding or falling over in unison. Conversely, during the 1,500-meter race, a domestically developed humanoid from Unitree showcased remarkable speed, completing the course in six minutes and 29.37 seconds, which, albeit impressive, still falls short of the human men’s world record of 3:26.00.

The event spotlighted the evolving landscape of robotics competitions, as this marked the first dedicated to robots that closely resemble human physiology. Traditionally, robot competitions have emphasized different forms and functionalities, but the 2025 World Humanoid Robot Games aimed to shift the narrative towards humanoid forms.

Significant governmental support underpins China’s ambitions in the robotics sector, as officials seek to position the country as a leader in technological innovation. According to the International Federation of Robotics, the Chinese government has made humanoid robotics a central component of its national strategy, emphasizing the need to demonstrate both competence and global competitiveness in this rapidly advancing field.

Earlier this year, China announced a substantial one-trillion-yuan (9 billion) fund aimed at bolstering technology start-ups, particularly in robotics and artificial intelligence. With such investments, China is poised to further its position as the largest market for industrial robots, an assertion reinforced by recent events like what was touted as the world’s first humanoid robot half-marathon held in April.

These developments signify an exciting era in robotics, where the blending of sports and technology paves the way for future innovations, spotlighting the optimism surrounding advancements in humanoid robotics and their potential applications across various sectors.
