Houthis declare readiness to launch attacks on Israel if the conflict in Gaza escalates again.

Yemen’s Houthis have signaled their preparedness to intervene should Israel deviate from its ceasefire agreement with Hamas and reactivate its military operations in Gaza. In a televised address on Tuesday, the group’s leader, Abdel-Malik al-Houthi, articulated a commitment to act swiftly on behalf of Palestinians should hostilities resurface.

The Houthis, who maintain control over much of western Yemen, including the capital city of Sanaa, have shown solidarity with the Palestinian cause throughout the ongoing conflict. Since November 2023, they have conducted over 100 operations targeting commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea, along with missile and drone launches directed at Israel. Following the recent ceasefire reached between Israel and Hamas, the group stated it would scale back its military actions; however, the tenuous agreement is becoming increasingly wobbly due to reports of Israel violating its commitments.

The ceasefire, currently in its first of three planned phases, aims to facilitate the exchange of captives, the partial withdrawal of Israeli forces, and an increase in humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The second phase, which remains to be finalized, envisions a comprehensive cessation of hostilities, while the third phase will focus on the substantial reconstruction efforts required for the heavily impacted area.

On Monday, Hamas declared it would cease releasing Israeli captives, citing Israeli infractions including fatal incidents, hindrances on medical evacuations, and inadequate aid deliveries. The group emphasized its willingness to continue with the agreement if Israel adheres to its responsibilities.

The geopolitical landscape thickened as U.S. President Donald Trump remarked that the truce could be rescinded if Hamas did not expeditiously release all Israeli captives. Senior Hamas figure Sami Abu Zuhri highlighted the importance of mutual respect for the ceasefire, denouncing threats as detrimental to the resolution process.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed Trump’s sentiments in a subsequent video statement, asserting his command for the Israeli military to prepare for potential escalations against Hamas. Israel’s Defense Minister has since instructed a heightened state of readiness for operations in Gaza.

As the conflict continues, humanitarian crises unfold, with Gaza’s Health Ministry reporting that the war has resulted in 48,219 confirmed Palestinian fatalities. The ongoing strife has led to widespread devastation of infrastructure, mass displacement, and a looming humanitarian catastrophe for the region’s civilians.

As diplomatic efforts and local responses unfold, the international community closely watches developments that could further impact stability in the Middle East and the fate of the Palestinian people.
