Hezbollah Refuses to Disarm, Claims Demands are Beneficial to Israel

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has recently articulated a strong stance against calls for the disarmament of the Lebanese group, asserting that such demands primarily serve the interests of Israel. In a televised address marking the first anniversary of the targeted assassination of senior commander Fuad Shukr, Qassem affirmed the group’s commitment to retaining its arms, stating, “Those who call for submitting arms practically demand submitting them to Israel… We will not submit to Israel.”

Despite facing significant challenges following a conflict with Israel last year, which resulted in considerable loss of life among its fighters and displacement of thousands of its supporters, Hezbollah remains resolute. Reports from ZezapTV indicate that the United States is intensifying its pressure on Lebanon to formally commit to disarming Hezbollah as a prerequisite for negotiating a cessation to ongoing Israeli military operations in the region. This comes despite the truce established in November, which has seen Israeli actions continue against Lebanese targets.

Under the terms of the ceasefire, Hezbollah was expected to reposition its fighters north of the Litani River—approximately 30 kilometers from the Israeli border—allowing for the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeepers to operate in the area. However, Hezbollah has maintained a stance of partial disarmament, choosing not to relinquish its arsenal completely while considering strategic reductions.

In his assertions, Qassem emphasized that demands for disarmament serve Israeli interests and criticized U.S. envoys like Tom Barrack for advocating for disarmament under the pretense of securing Lebanon’s safety. He underscored that Israel’s capacity to threaten Lebanon is nonexistent and that the group will not allow its sovereignty to be compromised.

Moreover, Qassem highlighted the necessity for international and regional attention to pivot away from disarmament discussions and focus on stopping Israeli aggression. He reinforced that political discourse in Lebanon should center around addressing these ongoing attacks, rather than the notion of surrendering weapons to Israel.

Pressure on Lebanon from international entities to disarm Hezbollah has intensified, with key Lebanese officials indicating that a cabinet meeting will soon convene to address these pressing issues. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has called for discussions on extending state sovereignty across Lebanon’s territories, ensuring that any strategies for disarmament are approached thoughtfully and in line with national security considerations.

As this situation unfolds, the intersection of local governance and international diplomacy continues to highlight the complex dynamics at play in Lebanon’s ongoing quest for stability and security.
