Doctors Without Borders (MSF), recognized for its commitment to healthcare access in global crises, has urgently called for the release of Palestinian healthcare workers detained by Israeli authorities. In a statement released on Monday, the NGO expressed deep concern and outrage regarding the treatment of these professionals, most of whom are reportedly being held under deplorable conditions without justification.
Among the cases highlighted by MSF is that of Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, who has been in solitary confinement and subjected to torture since his arrest more than 18 months ago. MSF characterized this treatment as part of a troubling trend where Israeli authorities detain and target medical staff across Palestine, jeopardizing the nation’s vital healthcare system.
The organization Physicians for Human Rights Israel has reported that over 50 healthcare workers, including 15 doctors, are currently held in inhumane conditions by Israel. They have taken action by petitioning the Israeli Supreme Court for these workers’ release, shedding light on the ongoing human rights violations.
Healthcare Workers Watch reports that since the beginning of Israel’s aggressive military campaign in Gaza, which commenced on October 7, 2023, a staggering 446 Palestinian healthcare workers have been unlawfully detained. Tragically, six individuals are reported to have died while in custody, with their bodies still withheld by Israeli authorities.
MSF has also called for the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Mohammed Obeid, an orthopaedic surgeon who has been imprisoned for more than 600 days following his arrest while working at Kamal Adwan Hospital. The organization noted that world leaders have largely remained silent on these human rights abuses, stating, “Silence has become complicity.”
The NGO reiterated the urgent need for all arbitrarily detained medical personnel to be granted adequate medical care and humane conditions while awaiting their release. Earlier this month, a UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, along with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, also advocated for the release of Dr. Abu Safia and all other medical personnel detained without due process.
Concern for Dr. Abu Safia’s health has been heightened by his lawyer, Nasser Odeh, who has warned that the peadiatrician’s wellbeing is at risk and has shown signs of torture. Israel has categorized him as an “unlawful combatant” and is holding him without a trial, raising significant concerns about legal rights and healthcare access for such professionals.
