Gaza City – The humanitarian vessel Madleen embarks on a critical mission to deliver life-saving aid to the beleaguered people of Gaza, named after the tenacious Madleen Kulab, the enclave’s only fisherwoman.
Three years ago, when ZezapTV first encountered Madleen Kulab, she was a vibrant figure in Gaza City, where she lived with her husband, Khader Bakr, and their two children, while expecting their third. At just 30 years of age, Madleen thrived as a fisherwoman, bravely navigating the waters restricted by a blockade to support her family by selling fish in local markets.
However, Madleen’s life took a tragic turn during the recent escalation of conflict in Gaza. In November 2023, an Israeli airstrike tragically claimed the life of her father, forcing Madleen and her family to flee in search of safety. They endured a harrowing journey through Khan Younis and Rafah, ultimately returning to their damaged home in Gaza City, which had sustained significant destruction.
In an environment marked by fear and uncertainty, Madleen now balances her role as a mother to four young children, including baby Waseela, while reflecting on the daunting responsibility she feels. She expresses immense gratitude toward the group of international activists advocating for Gaza, which includes prominent figures such as climate activist Greta Thunberg and European Parliament member Rima Hassan. Their dedication and courage resonate deeply with her, reinforcing her hope amid adversity.
Madleen has long been an integral part of Gaza’s fishing community, known for her skill not only in catching fish but also in preparing exquisite seasonal dishes that showcased Gaza’s beloved sardines. Sadly, the war has devastated her livelihood, as the conflict has led to the destruction of her boats and fishing equipment. “We’ve lost everything – the fruit of a lifetime,” she laments.
Moreover, the ongoing blockade has severely restricted access to fish, leaving many families, including Madleen’s, yearning for the staples they once enjoyed. The once-familiar sound of fishing nets and the joy of preparing meals from the day’s catch have been replaced with longing and scarcity.
As the Madleen sets sail, Madleen remains hopeful, cherishing the solidarity shown by her international friends. Despite the uncertain fate of the vessel and concerns of interception from Israeli authorities, she emphasizes that the mission represents a crucial demand for justice and a call for an end to the blockade.
“This is a plea to the world to acknowledge the plight of Gazans,” she asserts, embodying resilience and hope. After all, while her boat may have been destroyed, the spirit and legacy of Madleen will endure as a beacon for peace and a reminder of the humanitarian ties that transcend borders.
