Despite the daunting backdrop of ongoing conflict in Gaza, siblings Sama, Abdullah, and Nada Musa directed their focus on the Tawjihi exams, a series of critical assessments that shape the academic futures of Palestinian high school students. Their hard work culminated in a celebratory moment when they learned that all three had excelled, with Sama scoring an impressive 97.5 percent, Abdullah achieving 94.6 percent, and Nada close behind at 94.4 percent.
Sama, who earned the top score among his siblings, expressed that the path to academic success was both “exceptional and difficult.” He credited his family’s encouragement, stating, “Thank God for everything. I expected a higher grade, but the circumstances determined the result we achieved.” Through his persistence, he aimed to uplift his family and fulfill a long-held dream despite the challenges surrounding them.
The journey was particularly demanding for Abdullah and Nada, who faced physical disabilities that restricted their participation in private lessons. Their mother, Hind Muhanna, played an instrumental role, arranging for teachers to provide home instruction. “We worked very hard for them, and today I am reaping the fruits of their success. However, he felt grateful that their final grades accurately reflected their combined dedication. “It was a very difficult year filled with displacement and hardships, but despite the pain, we were able to reach the top and achieve the goals we worked for,” he indicated.
This year’s Tawjihi exams saw around 89,000 students from the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza partake in the assessment, with more than 106,000 students in Gaza having taken the exams during the previous three years. Tragically, over 1,100 students scheduled to sit for exams this year were killed amidst ongoing hostilities. The war in Gaza has devastated infrastructure, leading to thousands of homes and schools being destroyed, jeopardizing educational resources and opportunities for learning.
