In the aftermath of Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza, the Sobh family has found temporary refuge in a coastal camp situated west of Gaza City, where they have faced significant challenges in accessing basic necessities. The family has endured multiple displacements throughout the turmoil, illustrating the plight of many families caught in the crossfire.
Fadi Sobh, a 30-year-old street vendor, describes the oppressive heat within their makeshift tent, which has become a struggle for the family during the sweltering summer months. His wife, Abeer, 29, collects seawater for their daily needs due to the scarcity of clean water—a situation all too familiar for families in similar circumstances across the region.
Their children must navigate the challenging conditions of camp life, where simple acts like bathing become arduous tasks. Abeer manages to bathe her nine-month-old daughter Hala using saltwater, although it causes discomfort and tears for the infant. Meanwhile, the older siblings display remarkable resilience, enduring similar trials with stoicism.
Nutrition remains a pressing concern, as Abeer tries her best to provide for her family. On fortunate days, she has lentils to grind and mix with water for Hala. Abeer reflects on her daily challenges, commenting that each day feels like an interminable struggle against the relentless heat, scarcity of food, and the distress that envelops their situation.
Fadi often journeys to a nearby soup kitchen, sometimes accompanied by one of his children, with hopes of acquiring food. Unfortunately, the kitchen operates infrequently and is often unable to meet the overwhelming demand. Many times, he returns empty-handed, leaving his family to face the harsh reality of hunger.
The determination of Abeer shines through as she sometimes ventures alone or takes her son Youssef to the Zikim crossing, searching for aid amidst predominantly male crowds. While she occasionally succeeds in securing provisions, there are times when her efforts yield little, compelling her to rely on the kindness of others. The generosity of fellow community members often offers her small sustenance, demonstrating the spirit of solidarity evident among those facing adversity.
During the hottest parts of the day, the children remain close to their tent, as their parents encourage them to rest and conserve energy. As night falls and temperatures dip, Abeer sometimes sends her children to kindly ask neighbors for food or takes them scavenging for cooking fuel amid the rubble of Gaza’s streets.
Despite their best efforts, the family frequently goes to bed without a meal, with Abeer feeling the weight of her distress and exhaustion. “I am tired. I am no longer able,” she expresses, encapsulating the emotional toll that ongoing conflict has on individuals grappling with despair. Nonetheless, the resilience demonstrated by the Sobh family serves as a potent reminder of the strength and perseverance found in communities around the world.
Witnessing their day-to-day struggle sheds light on the urgent need for humanitarian support in the region, illustrating the profound impact of prolonged conflict on innocent lives.
