Preliminary Findings on Air India Boeing 787 Crash Point to Fuel Switch Issues
In the aftermath of the tragic Air India flight crash that occurred on June 12, which resulted in the loss of 260 lives, a preliminary report from India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has shed light on critical aspects of the incident. The report, which was released recently, reveals that the fuel control switches on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner were inexplicably shifted from the “run” to the “cutoff” position just moments after takeoff.
This alarming detail is crucial, as the switch movement happened approximately three seconds into the flight from Ahmedabad to London. Following the alteration, the aircraft swiftly began to lose thrust, leading to a steep descent. The cockpit voice recorder captured a conversation between the pilots, in which one questioned why the fuel had been cut off. The other pilot denied having made such a switch, leaving several questions surrounding accountability unanswered.
Importantly, the report did not assign blame or identify the pilot responsible for transmitting the “Mayday” distress call before the fatal crash. Furthermore, the investigation has not clarified how such a critical switch could have been inadvertently moved to the cutoff position, especially as aviation safety experts, including John Cox, emphasize the difficulty in unintentionally adjusting these switches.
It’s noteworthy that the cutoff position is traditionally used to deactivate engines after landing or in emergencies such as engine fires. The preliminary report suggests there was no immediate emergency justifying such an action, complicating the understanding of the events that transpired.
As the AAIB continues its investigation, it noted that there are no current recommendations for Boeing 787-8 and GE GEnx-1B engine operators or manufacturers based on the early findings. All passengers and crew members on board were tragically lost, save for one survivor, Viswashkumar Ramesh. The crash also claimed the lives of 19 individuals on the ground as the plane went down in the residential area of Meghani Nagar.
The AAIB’s ongoing investigation represents a significant undertaking in aviation safety, reflecting a commitment to understanding and preventing such tragedies in the future. The incident marks a somber chapter in aviation history, being the deadliest crash in a decade and serving as a reminder of the inherent risks involved in air travel.
As the world watches closely, the findings of this investigation may lead to important enhancements in safety protocols across the industry.
