In a tragic incident on Saturday, an attack at a courthouse in Zahedan, the capital of Iran’s southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province, resulted in the deaths of at least five civilians, including a mother and her child, and left 13 others injured. Reports from Iranian media indicate that armed assailants launched a grenade into the courthouse building, drawing attention to the ongoing security challenges in the region.
According to a senior police official, the assault involved attackers disguised as visitors, who sought to infiltrate the courthouse. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported that three of the gunmen were killed during the altercation. The militant group Jaish al-Adl, which operates in the Baloch region—spanning both Iran and Pakistan—has claimed responsibility for the attack, urging civilians to leave the area for their safety.
The Sistan-Baluchestan province is noteworthy for its distinct cultural and religious landscape, being home to Iran’s Sunni Muslim Baloch minority. This community has expressed concerns over historical economic marginalization and political exclusion. Despite these challenges, Iran remains engaged in seeking resolution pathways that promote stability and development in the region.
In light of the ongoing turbulence, local human rights group HAALVSH reported that several judiciary staff members and security personnel were among those injured as the attackers stormed the judges’ chambers. Iranian emergency personnel swiftly responded to the scene, evacuating the wounded and providing necessary medical assistance.
Fighting between Iranian security forces and various armed groups is a recurring issue in Sistan-Baluchestan, a border region adjacent to Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Iranian government has long accused certain armed factions of fostering ties with foreign entities and participating in smuggling operations, complicating the security dynamics of the area. Despite this, numerous groups claim to be advocating for greater rights, calling attention to their socio-economic struggles.
The province has seen multiple clashes, with one of the deadliest recent incidents resulting in the deaths of ten police officers in October during what authorities deemed a “terrorist” attack. As the situation evolves, the focus remains on nurturing peace and addressing the deep-rooted issues facing the Baloch minority while ensuring the safety and security of all communities involved.
