In a tragic incident in Taiz city, Yemen, at least five children lost their lives following the detonation of an explosive device while they were playing football in a residential area. This heart-wrenching event occurred late Friday evening in the al-Hashmah subdistrict, a region that has seen significant conflict related to Yemen’s ongoing civil war.

Human rights organizations, including the Yemen Center for Human Rights and Eye of Humanity, alongside Houthi-controlled Al Masirah TV, reported that an artillery shell was allegedly fired by militias affiliated with the Islah party, which supports the internationally recognized Yemeni government. Eyewitness accounts from local residents, Ahmed al-Sharee and Khaled al-Areki, confirm that the explosive went off while the children were engaged in the game.

In addition to the young victims, at least three individuals sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate and were promptly transported to a local hospital. Witness Mahmoud al-Mansi indicated that the source of the explosion was located in an area controlled by Islah party forces. UNICEF, the United Nations children’s agency, acknowledged the reports of this alarming event but stated that they are currently unable to verify the specifics.

The Yemen Center for Human Rights issued a condemnation of the incident, sharing graphic details that highlighted the extent of the tragedy. According to medical personnel at al-Rafai Hospital, the victims suffered fatal injuries caused by shrapnel. Among those killed, two were 12 years old while another two were 14; the age of the fifth child remains unconfirmed.

Taiz city, serving as the provincial capital, has played a pivotal role in the protracted struggle among various factions, notably between the Houthis and the Islah-backed groups. Since 2016, the city has been subjected to a Houthi blockade that has hampered the movement of essential goods and services, although recent developments indicate that Houthi forces have begun to open vital passageways.

The civil war in Yemen ignited in 2014 when the Houthis seized control of the capital, Sanaa, displacing the recognized government. A coalition led by Saudi Arabia and predominantly comprising UAE forces intervened in 2015 to reinstate the exiled government. Despite numerous UN-brokered peace negotiations over the years, a comprehensive resolution to the conflict remains elusive. However, since the ceasefire agreement reached in 2022, hostilities have largely subsided, allowing a brief respite for conflict-affected populations.

This heartbreaking episode emphasizes the urgent need for continued international support for the people of Yemen, particularly its children, who have borne the brunt of this enduring conflict. The hope for peace remains a central focus, as humanitarian conditions improve gradually with ongoing diplomatic efforts.
