As Manchester United continues to struggle in the Champions League, the pressure mounts on manager Michael Carrick following a disheartening 4-1 defeat to Como. Captain Bruno Fernandes openly criticized the team’s lack of intensity and tactical approach, reflecting a broader concern about the club’s current trajectory and cohesion amidst a disappointing winless streak.

In a disappointing display, Manchester United suffered a 4-1 defeat against Como in a Champions League match, deepening scrutiny on manager Michael Carrick. The captain, Bruno Fernandes, expressed his frustration at the team’s performance, particularly their lack of pressure on the opposition, which he attributed to a “mood of defeat” that crystallized after Como’s early goal just two minutes into the game. Although United managed to grab a consolation goal from Joshua Zirkzee late in stoppage time, the collapse underscored a troubling trend for the club, which has now gone seven matches without a victory.

“We started on the wrong foot, and they scored very early,” Fernandes explained to TNT Sports. “There was not enough pressure on the ball and not many good movements off the ball. There were many things not going our way.” The captain’s comments suggested a tactical limitation, pointing to a coaching decision not to press opponents man-to-man, thereby allowing Como to dominate the match and build confidence.

When asked whether his critique was directed at Carrick’s tactics, Fernandes responded cautiously, stating that such assessments were for the coaching staff to evaluate. Yet, he emphasized the need for the team to adopt a more courageous and aggressive approach during matches. “Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable,” he added.

Carrick, who bears the brunt of the blame for this disappointing streak, accepted responsibility for the team’s overall performance. “It was more than disappointing,” remarked the 45-year-old manager after the game. “I think everybody’s got to take responsibility for that. It stops with me, and I’m fine with that as a supporter of this football club, to see a performance like that is unacceptable.”

He expressed that the players did not bring the necessary motivation or intensity required in such crucial matches. “I’ve got to apologize for the performance,” Carrick stated. Fernandes further highlighted the negative impact of conceding early, claiming it contributes to a defeatist mentality that plagues the squad.

With only three points from their opening three Champions League matches, Manchester United’s next challenge will be a home fixture against AS Roma, a match that will require a significant turnaround in performance if Carrick hopes to alleviate the growing concerns surrounding his management and the future of the team.
