The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has formally identified a solitary suspect in the tragic New Year’s Day car-ramming incident in New Orleans, Louisiana. During a news conference held on Thursday, Christopher Raia, deputy assistant director from the FBI’s counterterrorism division, confirmed that 42-year-old Shamsud-Dim Jabbar, a Texas resident, is the only individual currently implicated in this unfortunate attack.
Raia emphasized the early nature of the investigation while expressing confidence that no accomplices are involved in the assault that left 14 dead and injured at least 35 others. The incident took place on Bourbon Street, a renowned hub for tourism and nightlife, underscoring the significance of safety in public spaces.
The attack unfolded when Jabbar allegedly drove a rented Ford F-150 pickup truck through a traffic barricade, driving two and a half blocks into crowds gathered to celebrate the New Year. Among the deceased are notable victims, including a devoted father from Baton Rouge and a promising football player from Princeton University.

In a concerning development, Jabbar posted a series of videos on Facebook shortly before the assault, expressing his allegiance to the group known as ISIL (ISIS). This revelation, according to Raia, indicates that Jabbar was likely inspired by extremism.
The investigation remains active, with FBI agents sifting through evidence from Jabbar’s electronic devices, including three phones and two laptops. Over 400 tips have been received from the public since the incident, highlighting the community’s support in assisting law enforcement.
