A former employee of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Asif William Rahman, has admitted to leaking classified national defense information, particularly regarding Israel’s military strategies against Iran. This admission comes at a time when regional tensions are heightened, linked to the ongoing conflict involving Israel and Gaza, as well as Lebanon. The United States Department of Justice announced on Friday that Rahman, 34, pleaded guilty to two counts of willful retention and transmission of classified information.
According to the plea agreement, Rahman is set for sentencing on May 15, where he could face a maximum penalty of ten years in prison. Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen emphasized the significance of this case, stating that Rahman’s actions represented a breach of trust with the American public. The Department of Justice is committed to investigating and prosecuting those who compromise national security through the unlawful disclosure of sensitive information.
Rahman, a CIA employee since 2016 with a Top-Secret security clearance, was arrested in Cambodia in November following a coordinated operation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Reports indicated that he had leaked sensitive documents produced by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), which is responsible for analyzing data from U.S. spy satellites and supporting covert military initiatives.
The leaked documents, which surfaced on the Telegram messaging app in October, revealed that Israel was deploying military resources in anticipation of a potential strike in response to a ballistic missile attack from Iran on October 1. This strike by Iran was framed as retaliation for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and a senior Iranian military figure. In turn, Israel conducted its own strikes on Iranian sites in late October.
Court documents disclose that Rahman accessed and printed two “Top Secret” documents containing crucial information about a U.S. ally’s planned operations against an adversary. He then took the substantial step of photographing these documents and sharing them with unauthorized individuals.
