A man in California has been charged with multiple counts of attempted murder following an incident in which he allegedly drove his vehicle into a crowd outside a nightclub in Los Angeles, causing injuries to several individuals. Fernando Ramirez, 29, a resident of San Clemente, was charged with 37 counts of attempted murder as well as 37 counts of assault with a deadly weapon by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The incident occurred early on Saturday as patrons were leaving the Vermont Hollywood venue after a reggae hip-hop event. According to prosecutors, Ramirez is accused of deliberately steering his car onto the sidewalk, where he struck partygoers. This alarming act resulted in injuries to 37 individuals, prompting a swift response from law enforcement and emergency medical services.
Currently being held without bail, Ramirez is due for arraignment. As of now, a public defender has not yet been assigned to his case. The nature of the attack remains unclear, with authorities investigating potential motives. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman emphasized the gravity of the situation, indicating that the attack could have resulted in catastrophic consequences.
Fortunately, while the collision did cause significant injuries, reports indicate that the swift intervention of bystanders prevented a greater tragedy. The car finally came to a halt after colliding with a series of food carts, which became wedged underneath the vehicle. Eyewitnesses then attempted to thwart further harm by restraining Ramirez until police arrived on the scene.
Twenty-three individuals were hospitalized following the incident, with injuries that spanned from minor abrasions to serious fractures. Legal documents reveal that Ramirez inflicted substantial injury on at least eight of the victims. Police reports indicate that while Ramirez was being confronted by bystanders, he sustained gunshot wounds, prompting his hospitalization as well.
This incident has understandably caused distress within the community, described by authorities as a brazen act that might have resulted in multiple casualties had circumstances been different. Officials, including Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell, have expressed relief that the outcome was not more tragic.
Ramirez’s legal history includes various charges, including battery and gang-related offenses dating back to 2014. His recent history includes charges related to domestic violence and drink-driving, reinforcing concerns regarding his actions and their impact on public safety.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the community grapples with the repercussions of this violence and the ongoing need for vigilance and support for the victims affected by this distressing episode.
