The Dominican Republic has announced a significant enhancement of its border security measures in response to the ongoing instability in neighboring Haiti, an initiative aimed at safeguarding national interests while addressing complex migration challenges. President Luis Abinader outlined these measures on Sunday, reinforcing the commitment to secure the nation’s borders amidst worsening conditions in Haiti, characterized by escalating violence and disorder.
In an effort to strengthen national security, President Abinader stated that he would augment border surveillance with an additional 1,500 troops, supplementing the existing force of 9,500 soldiers already deployed along the extensive 300-kilometer border. This initiative reflects his administration’s dedication to managing immigration effectively, particularly as thousands of Haitians seek refuge from the turmoil engulfing their homeland.
Furthermore, the Dominican Republic is moving forward with the construction of an additional 13 kilometers of the border wall that separates the two countries. This measures aims to ensure a more secure boundary, with 54 kilometers of the wall already completed. President Abinader highlighted the urgency of this project as part of a broader strategy to regulate migration more effectively and to deter irregular border crossings.
In addition to physical security enhancements, the administration is also pursuing legal reforms intended to impose stricter penalties on those who facilitate illegal migration into the country. These policy shifts come amid deepening crises in Haiti, where violent gangs have taken control of significant portions of the capital, Port-au-Prince, leaving a large segment of the population vulnerable and displaced.
The United Nations has reported troubling statistics, noting that over 5,600 individuals lost their lives in 2024 due to the ongoing violence, with more than one million people displaced, many of whom are now seeking refuge in the Dominican Republic. In response, Dominican authorities have enacted stringent deportation policies that aim to repatriate significant numbers of Haitian migrants, leading to calls for humanitarian consideration.
Human rights advocates have raised concerns about these deportation practices, urging a reconsideration of the policies in light of the dire conditions awaiting returnees in Haiti.
