A recent study has revealed that nearly half of the global population experienced an additional month of unprecedented extreme heat over the past year, a stark consequence of human-induced climate change. This comprehensive report, a collaborative effort by World Weather Attribution, Climate Central, and the Red Cross, underscores the urgent need for action to mitigate the effects of rising temperatures.
The analysis, which examined weather data from May 1, 2024, to May 1, 2025, defines extreme heat as temperatures exceeding 90 percent of historical averages recorded between 1991 and 2020. The findings indicate that approximately four billion people—equivalent to 49 percent of the world’s population—endured at least 30 days of extreme heat during this period, with 67 significant heat events documented.
The report emphasizes that, while extreme weather events such as floods and cyclones frequently capture media attention, extreme heat may pose the most significant threat to public health and safety. Researchers caution that fatalities associated with extreme heat are often underreported, with many deaths occurring silently in hospitals or in poorly insulated homes, highlighting the necessity for improved data reporting and public awareness campaigns.
Friederike Otto, an associate professor of climate science at Imperial College London and one of the authors of the report, notes the growing correlation between greenhouse gas emissions and extreme heat events. “With every barrel of oil burned and every tonne of carbon dioxide released, the likelihood of heatwaves affecting populations increases,” Otto stated, beckoning a collective response to this escalating challenge.
The Caribbean emerged as one of the regions hardest hit by this additional extreme heat, with Aruba facing a staggering 187 extreme heat days—142 more than would have been expected without climate change. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions, bear the brunt of these temperatures, underscoring the need for targeted support measures.
Notably, extreme heat events recorded in regions such as Central Asia, South Sudan, and the Mediterranean were deemed unfeasible without climate change, illustrating the increasingly detrimental effects of rising global temperatures. In Morocco, for instance, a heatwave last July tragically resulted in the loss of 21 lives, further demonstrating the urgent significance of addressing climate-related health risks.
Roop Singh, head of urban and attribution at the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, emphasized the gap in public perception about the rising temperatures linked to climate change. He called for a swift scaling up of resilience measures, including improved early warning systems and the formulation of comprehensive heat action plans to adapt urban areas to the realities of extreme heat.
The researchers assert that without a decisive move away from fossil fuel dependence, the frequency and intensity of heatwaves will continue to escalate, underscoring the urgent necessity for coordinated global efforts aimed at combating climate change and protecting vulnerable populations.
