In a statement posted on social media earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Hun emphasized that the primary goal of the discussions is to establish an immediate cessation of hostilities with Thailand. However, Prime Minister Phumtham expressed skepticism, citing a lack of genuine intent from Cambodia based on previous actions. He stated that demonstrable commitment to peace must be shown during their meeting.
Despite the diplomatic efforts, reports indicate that military confrontations continue. Colonel Richa Suksuwanon, a spokesperson for the Thai army, underscored that hostilities persisted, with reports of gunfire audible in Samrong, a region within Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey province. On Sunday, Thailand reported casualties from a rocket fired by Cambodian forces.
On the Cambodian side, Ministry of National Defence spokesperson Maly Socheata countered allegations, accusing Thailand of amassing troops and using heavy artillery against Cambodian territory. She specifically cited incidents involving the ancient Ta Muen Thom and Ta Kwai temples — sites claimed by both nations — which have become focal points of the conflict. Socheata asserted that Cambodian forces successfully repelled Thai advancements during recent encounters.
While mediators remain cautious, the urgency for a resolution is underscored by the rising death toll and the humanitarian crisis unfolding due to mass displacement. Influential voices, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have been active on the ground in Malaysia to support these peace initiatives.
