The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that over 74,000 individuals in the United States lost their lives due to synthetic opioid overdoses in 2023. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) attributes the majority of the precursor chemicals required for fentanyl production to Chinese sources, predominantly trafficked by Mexican cartels.
