The incident occurred just after midnight, with police attributing the collision to two buses coming from opposite directions attempting to overtake a truck and a car.

Officials from the Uganda Police Force stated that during the overtaking maneuver, the two buses collided head-on. The police confirmed that all deceased were occupants of the involved vehicles, emphasizing the severity of the crash. “Sixty-three people lost lives, all occupants from involved vehicles,” the force stated in an update on X.

As investigations into the accident unfold, police have issued a cautionary statement urging all motorists to exercise maximum caution on the roads. They highlighted that dangerous and careless overtaking remains one of the leading causes of traffic accidents in the country. In their statement, they conveyed, “We strongly urge all motorists to exercise maximum caution on the roads, especially avoiding dangerous and careless overtaking.”

In addition to the fatalities, those traveling in the truck and the car sustained injuries and were promptly taken to Kiryandongo Hospital and other nearby medical facilities for treatment. However, additional information regarding the number of injured individuals or the extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.

The Kampala-Gulu Highway is regarded as one of Uganda’s busiest transport routes, linking the capital with the largest town in northern Uganda.
