Two British nationals, identified as Craig and Lindsay Foreman, have been detained in Iran and charged with espionage, according to reports from the Iranian judiciary’s Mizan news agency. The couple, who embarked on an extensive round-the-world motorcycle journey, are believed to have gathered information during their travels across various provinces in Iran.
The Foremans, described as a married couple in their early fifties, reportedly entered Iran as tourists, despite prior warnings against travel to the country owing to its complex geopolitical climate. Mizan indicated that their activities had drawn scrutiny from Iranian authorities, who allege connections to foreign intelligence services, leading to ongoing investigations concerning their alleged ties.
In the past few years, Iran has detained numerous foreigners and dual nationals primarily on charges related to espionage and national security, drawing attention to the delicate balance between tourism and international relations in the region. While she expressed enthusiasm for their travels, posting about her interactions with individuals as part of a project focused on identifying elements that contribute to a “good life,” Craig, a carpenter by profession, has previously spoken about the warmth of the Iranian people.
The British Foreign Office has acknowledged the situation, confirming that it is providing consular assistance and maintaining communication with Iranian authorities to facilitate the couple’s safe return.
