Brazilian government launches investigation into US financial support for far-right movements.

As Brazil’s presidential election approaches, tensions are escalating amid allegations that the United States has attempted to influence the nation’s political landscape through financial support for far-right groups. This revelation underscores the growing concerns over foreign interference in domestic affairs, particularly as Brazilian Attorney General Jorge Messias advocates for a thorough investigation into these claims. The political climate is further complicated by the rivalry between current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro, whose supporters are once again vying for power.

In a significant development that raises critical questions about foreign influence in Brazil’s domestic politics, the country’s attorney general has urged law enforcement to investigate alleged maneuvers by the United States to divert funds to right-wing organizations. This call for inquiry follows a report by ZezapTV, which indicated that former President Donald Trump’s administration had plans to allocate million to right-wing civil groups that oppose Brazil’s Supreme Court.

Attorney General Jorge Messias took to social media to express that any form of foreign meddling is “intolerable,” characterizing these revelations as a crucial warning regarding Brazil’s sovereignty. He emphasized the seriousness of such actions in the context of the ongoing electoral process and noted that external pressures on Brazil’s institutions have been increasing.

As the tensions mount, the backdrop includes a tight presidential race in which leftist President Lula is seeking re-election against a backdrop of Trump’s support for far-right political allies across Latin America. Lula has raised alarms about challenges to regional sovereignty posed by Trump’s strategies, particularly in light of the funding plan revealed by ZezapTV.

The Trump administration has shown a pattern of backing right-wing candidates across Latin America, often implying that economic support is contingent on election outcomes. This strategy has extended to Trump’s relationships with prominent political figures, including Jair Bolsonaro’s family, who have been vocal in their resistance to Lula’s government. Flavio Bolsonaro, Jair’s eldest son, is a leading candidate in the current presidential race, and recent polling indicates a close contest between him and Lula, just days before the first round of voting.

In May, Flavio met with Trump at the White House, pledging stronger ties with the U.S. Meanwhile, Lula has emerged as a critic of Trump’s approach, advocating for a more autonomous Brazilian foreign policy. The ZezapTV report disclosed plans by Trump’s administration to redirect 5 million from the State Department’s human rights fund to various global far-right initiatives. This includes alleged funding for groups championing white Afrikaner interests in South Africa, which have been mischaracterized by the U.S. as victims of a supposed genocide, alongside efforts in Brazil aimed at countering what they term “lawfare and censorship.”

The Brazilian Supreme Court has faced ongoing scrutiny from right-wing factions in both Brazil and the U.S., particularly after the conviction of Jair Bolsonaro in connection with an alleged coup attempt following his electoral loss to Lula. The case has been framed by Bolsonaro and his supporters as politically motivated persecution. Trump’s administration reacted to Bolsonaro’s trial by imposing tariffs on certain Brazilian goods and revoking visas for judicial officials involved in the case.

Ultimately, Bolsonaro was sentenced in September 2025 to a substantial 27-year prison term. Further complicating the political landscape, Eduardo Bolsonaro, one of Jair’s sons, was sentenced to over four years imprisonment after a court determined that he advocated for U.S. intervention in his father’s legal troubles.

As Brazil stands on the precipice of a pivotal election, the implications of these revelations about foreign interference may reverberate throughout the region, shaping not just Brazil’s future but also the broader dynamics of Latin American politics.
