The United Nations has expressed significant concern following the grim discovery of numerous bodies in areas of Tripoli that were previously held by the Stabilization Support Apparatus (SSA), a militia whose leadership experienced upheaval with the recent death of its commander. Volker Turk, the UN rights chief, addressed these findings on Wednesday, emphasizing the potential for severe human rights violations linked to the SSA.
Turk’s office revealed alarming evidence pointing to abuses at detention centers operated by the SSA, led until recently by Abdel-Ghani al-Kikli, who was killed amidst violent clashes in mid-May. This series of incidents has renewed fears regarding the treatment of detainees and the risks of extrajudicial killings in the region.
Reports indicate that investigators have found ten charred remains at the SSA’s base in Abu Salim, alongside an additional 67 corpses stored in hospital refrigerators at Abu Salim and Al Khadra healthcare facilities. Furthermore, a suspected burial site has been identified within the Tripoli Zoo, previously under SSA oversight, with the victims’ identities still unverified.
In a call for action, Turk urged the immediate containment of all related locations to protect crucial evidence and advocated for international oversight to ensure accountability. This push is critical for advancing the rule of law and safeguarding human rights in Libya, a country striving for stability amidst ongoing challenges.
Abdel-Ghani al-Kikli was a prominent figure in Tripoli’s militia landscape, which has been characterized by power struggles with rival groups. His SSA was formally linked to the UN-recognized Government of National Unity (GNU), established in 2021. The political turmoil that followed al-Kikli’s assassination led to escalated violence within Tripoli, prompting the closure of schools and the institution of a citywide curfew, as the UN Support Mission in Libya called for all factions to cease hostilities and prioritize civilian safety.
