In a significant disruption affecting millions, numerous high-traffic websites and applications, including popular gaming, financial, and social media platforms, encountered serious connectivity issues on October 20, 2025. This inconvenience stemmed from an outage suffered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), a critical infrastructure provider for many digital services worldwide.

Amazon Web Services acknowledged the problem in an official update on its status page. The company indicated substantial error rates occurring for requests directed to the DynamoDB endpoint in the US-EAST-1 Region. Following this disclosure, AWS communicated that it had identified a potential root cause of these error rates and was actively working on several parallel paths to expedite recovery efforts.

Prominent platforms such as AI startup Perplexity, trading app Robinhood, the messaging application Signal, and cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase reported that the connectivity issues they encountered were directly linked to the AWS outage. In a post on X, Perplexity’s CEO, Aravind Srinivas, confirmed that the company was addressing the challenges arising from AWS’s technical difficulties.

AWS stands as a leading provider in the cloud computing sector, competing vigorously with offerings from Google and Microsoft. By supplying on-demand computing power, data storage, and various digital services, AWS is essential for the operational backbone of countless businesses and institutions. As hundreds of thousands rely on its infrastructure, any outage can have ripple effects across the internet, resulting in widespread service disruptions.

Web users turned to platforms like Downdetector to report outages, which compiled a comprehensive list of affected sites. High-profile names such as Zoom, Roblox, Fortnite, Duolingo, and Canva featured prominently among those experiencing access difficulties during the outage.

Furthermore, Amazon’s portfolio—particularly its shopping site, Prime Video, and Alexa services—also demonstrated operational challenges as a result of the incident. Reports from various news agencies indicated that users of the Lyft app in the US faced significant challenges, while numerous bank customers in the UK experienced service outages, highlighting the extensive impact of this AWS disruption.

The incident serves as a reminder of the interdependence of modern digital services and the critical role that cloud providers like AWS play in daily online activities. As the situation develops, AWS remains focused on resolving the issues to restore services fully.
