In a shocking incident in the Albanian capital of Tirana, Appeals Court Judge Astrit Kalaja tragically lost his life following an exchange of gunfire during a courtroom proceeding on Monday. The attack occurred when a 30-year-old man on trial allegedly shot the judge, who succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital, as confirmed by Albanian police.

The suspect reportedly fled the scene after opening fire, but he was later apprehended by law enforcement authorities. The revolver used in the attack has since been recovered. In addition to the judge, the gunman also targeted a father and son involved in the trial, who were quickly transported to a medical facility. Fortunately, their injuries were assessed as non-life-threatening.

Local media reports indicate that the court case at hand pertained to a property dispute, drawing attention to the heightened tensions that can accompany such legal matters. In the wake of this tragedy, Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama characterized the event as a “tragic event” that necessitates serious consideration of the security protocols within the justice system. In a statement on social media platform X, he advocated for more stringent penalties for crimes involving firearms, emphasizing that the individual responsible for the judge’s death should face the “most extreme legal response.”

Condemnation of the attack further came from President Bajram Begaj, who described the assassination as “a terrible attack against the entire justice system.”

The alarming rise in gun-related incidents in Albania surfaced in recent statistics, which recorded 213 such events during the first half of this year, according to the South Eastern and Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons. Furthermore, under current Albanian law, possessing firearms illegally can lead to penalties of up to three years in prison.

Despite a backdrop of judicial reforms initiated in 2016 with support from the European Union and the United States, which aimed to streamline the legal system, Albania has struggled with a significant court backlog, leaving tens of thousands of cases unresolved for multiple years. This situation underscores the urgency for reforms not only in judicial efficiency but also in courtroom safety protocols, ensuring that legal professionals and citizens alike can participate in the judicial process without fear of violence.

The tragic loss of Judge Kalaja highlights deeper issues facing the Albanian judiciary and calls for a collective response to ensure the safety and integrity of its justice system. #PoliticsNews #WorldNews
