Shakur, originally known as Joanne Deborah Chesimard, gained notoriety following her conviction in 1977 for the murder of a New Jersey state trooper. The incident involved a dramatic shootout with members of the Black Liberation Army (BLA), which she was a part of—an organization that sought to uplift and empower Black communities across the United States. Throughout her life, Shakur maintained her innocence, claiming that she had her hands raised during the confrontation.
In the aftermath of the shootout, which resulted in the tragic death of state trooper Werner Foerster, Shakur was sentenced to life imprisonment. However, in a daring escape facilitated by her BLA comrades, she fled from Clinton Correctional Facility for Women.
