Pathway to Victory: Exploring How Trump or Harris Could Secure the Presidency in the Upcoming US Election

As the United States presidential election draws near, the focus intensifies on the various routes candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump may take within the Electoral College to secure the presidency. A candidate must obtain at least 270 out of 538 electoral votes to emerge victorious in this pivotal democratic process.

Electoral votes are distributed among the states based on population figures, with certain states consistently leaning toward one political party. Meanwhile, others, known as “battleground” or “swing states,” remain unpredictable, often determining the election outcome. This cycle features seven key battleground states, collectively worth 93 electoral votes: Pennsylvania (19), Georgia (16), North Carolina (16), Michigan (15), Arizona (11), Wisconsin (10), and Nevada (6).

Kamala Harris currently appears poised to garner at least 226 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia, drawing significant support from major states like California (54), New York (28), and Illinois (19). To achieve the critical 270 electoral votes necessary for a win, Harris will need to secure at least 44 votes from the battleground states. A feasible strategy for her could involve winning Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina, which would grant her 51 electoral votes; however, current polling indicates that she is trailing Trump in these states, albeit by narrow margins in Pennsylvania.

For the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, projections show a potential acquisition of at least 219 electoral votes from 24 states, with heavy support from Texas (40), Florida (30), and Ohio (17). Trump will similarly need at least 51 electoral votes from the battleground states to cross the threshold of 270. As it stands, winning Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina could clinch victory for Trump, as he currently leads in those polls.

In a scenario where both candidates reach a tie at 269 electoral votes, a contingent election would ensue, with the U.S. House of Representatives determining the winner. Each state’s delegation casts one vote, requiring a majority of 26 votes to secure victory, while the U.S. Senate would then choose the vice president.

As the campaign progresses, the dynamics of these battleground states and voter mobilization efforts will play critical roles in the journey to the presidency.
