Data from the Nutrition Cluster, referenced in the OCHA report, indicates that since January, more than 16,500 children in Gaza have been identified and treated for severe acute malnutrition, including 141 cases that required hospitalization due to complications. Despite these treatment efforts, the report highlights a critical shortage of resources, revealing that only four stabilization centers are operational for treating severe acute malnutrition with medical complications in the Gaza Strip. Disturbingly, stabilization centers in North Gaza and Rafah have had to close their doors, depriving vulnerable children in those areas of essential life-saving care.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially cautioned that Gaza’s health system is on the brink of collapse, drawing attention to the dire conditions that underscore the plight of the region’s population. The WHO has made an urgent appeal for the protection of the Nasser Medical Complex and Al-Amal Hospital—two crucial healthcare facilities at risk of becoming non-functional. This situation reflects a broader crisis that has seen health facilities repeatedly threatened amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
