The European Union and the United Kingdom have jointly unveiled coordinated sanctions packages aimed at intensifying pressure on President Vladimir Putin to conclude the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This announcement comes as a critical moment in the diplomatic efforts to establish a ceasefire, with the EU and the UK working in unison to address the situation.

The sanctions, introduced on Tuesday, specifically target what has been described as Russia’s shadow fleet of oil tankers, which illicitly transport oil in defiance of Western sanctions. Brussels has identified a total of 189 ships for this action. The UK has adopted a broader approach that encompasses not only the supply chains for Russian weapons systems, including Iskander missiles, but also financial institutions that facilitate Russia’s circumvention of these sanctions, as well as Kremlin-funded misinformation campaigns.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that an 18th sanctions package is already in development, following the recently enacted 17th package. Von der Leyen expressed the urgent need to increase pressure on Russia to achieve a ceasefire, following her discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In coverage from London, ZezapTV’s correspondent noted the synchronized nature of the EU and UK actions, which coincided with the establishment of a new defense and security pact during talks in the British capital. This close collaboration underlines the collective will of European nations to enhance security and stability within the region.

In response to the newly imposed sanctions, Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, reiterated Russia’s position, indicating that the country will not yield to external pressures. She suggested that Europe aims to re-arm Ukraine, thereby prolonging the conflict.

This coordinated effort followed a recent phone call between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Putin, where Trump was unable to secure a commitment for a ceasefire, reflecting the complexities that persist in diplomatic negotiations.

Following the discussions, President Putin expressed Moscow’s readiness to engage with Ukraine on a memorandum concerning future peace arrangements. Zakharova stated that the responsibility now rests with Kyiv and expressed hope for a constructive response from Ukraine, emphasizing the need for self-preservation.

Zelenskyy, however, highlighted the perception that Russia aims to buy time to sustain its military operations. He reiterated the importance of ongoing collaboration with international partners to ensure that Russia is held accountable.

Both Brussels and London have indicated that further sanctions may be forthcoming. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has emphasized the necessity of additional actions to compel President Putin to relinquish what he termed his “imperialist pursuits.” Similarly, Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius remarked on Putin’s apparent disinterest in peace, calling the current situation unfortunate but indicative of Russia’s intentions.

As these diplomatic and economic maneuvers continue, the international community remains watchful, eager to see whether these pressures will lead to a resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.
