At least 33 individuals have lost their lives in a series of violent confrontations in Sudan, predominantly attributed to the activities of the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This latest surge in violence starkly underscores the ongoing turmoil that has gripped the nation for more than two years.
Recent incidents included a brutal attack on a prison in el-Obeid, resulting in the deaths of at least 19 people. In a separate episode, 14 members of a single family tragically perished during an airstrike in Darfur, as reported by local sources. These confrontations are part of the RSF’s protracted conflict with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) since the outbreak of war in 2023.
The escalations over the past week have seen a series of drone assaults by the RSF targeting Port Sudan, the wartime capital controlled by military leadership. Vital infrastructure has suffered damage during these attacks, including a power grid and the last operational civilian airport in the country, which serves as a crucial entry point for humanitarian aid into the region devastated by ongoing conflict.
The humanitarian situation is dire. According to the United Nations, the war has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and forced 13 million individuals to flee their homes. The conflict, which has drawn attention globally, is now recognized as one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent history.
Recent reports detail the assault on the prison, which also left 45 individuals injured as a drone strike hit in an area governed by military forces in North Kordofan state. Additionally, the attack on the Abu Shouk displacement camp near el-Fasher, which has endured intense bombardment, further exacerbates the plight of tens of thousands of individuals who have sought refuge there from previous conflicts in Darfur.
As the violence continues, the situation remains critical, with reports indicating that the RSF has consistently targeted the camp over recent weeks. Abu Shouk is strategically significant, situated near the Zamzam camp, which the RSF captured earlier this year in a sustained and devastating operation.
In a further escalation on the same day, SAF warplanes targeted RSF positions in the cities of Nyala and el-Geneina. This military action reportedly dismantled armaments and military resources used by the RSF, which has recently claimed control of the strategically important town of al-Nahud in West Kordofan, a pivotal supply line for military operations into Darfur.
Amid this abject crisis, allegations have emerged regarding external support for the RSF, with claims suggesting that foreign power influences, such as from the United Arab Emirates, may be supplying drones and other military resources to bolster their operations. This complex web of conflict, primarily fueled by a power struggle between SAF chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, remains deeply entrenched, effectively bifurcating the nation into regions dominated by opposing forces.
As both entities vie for control, the international community continues to monitor the situation, underscoring the urgency for diplomatic intervention and comprehensive humanitarian support.
