At least 500 children in Gaza have tragically lost their lives due to ongoing military actions, as stated by Mahmoud Basal, a spokesperson for Gaza Civil Defence. This grim toll follows the resumption of hostilities by Israel against Hamas last month, with a United Nations official portraying the region as a severely war-torn area experiencing unprecedented humanitarian crises.
In the most recent Israeli airstrikes on Saturday, at least six individuals were reported killed, including a child, accounting for over 20 deaths within 24 hours. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the cumulative death toll has exceeded 1,500 since Israel resumed aerial bombardments on March 18.
Specific reports from the Tuffah neighborhood in Gaza highlighted that two people lost their lives while two children sustained injuries due to Israeli attacks. Additionally, in Beit Lahiya, another two individuals were reported killed. In a drone attack in the Qizan an-Najjar area south of Khan Younis, another Palestinian fell victim. Disturbingly, civilian shelter areas, which were once labeled “safe zones” by Israeli authorities, have not been spared from these assaults, leading to casualties among displaced families.
Al Jazeera correspondent Hind Khoudary provided an account from outside Al-Ahli Hospital in Deir el-Balah, where a newborn named Sham suffered critical injuries after her family was struck. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, this child’s condition was beyond recovery, reflecting the harsh realities faced by many in Gaza.
Reports indicate that new evacuation orders have been issued in Shujayea and Khan Younis, leaving many Palestinian residents uncertain about their next steps, as they grapple with relentless violence and displacement.
The situation has drawn attention from international rights advocates. Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, revealed that 36 of the 224 Israeli airstrikes recorded between March 18 and April 9 resulted in casualties that were exclusively women and children. The Palestinian organization Al-Haq emphasized that the documented patterns suggest a troubling trend that merits global scrutiny.
Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), characterized the current conditions in Gaza as dire, with vital humanitarian aid being obstructed in violation of international law. He reiterated the urgent need for the international community to address the diminishing availability of food, medical supplies, and other essentials.
As the Israeli military continues its offensive, officials have indicated intentions to expand operations into southern Gaza, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. UNRWA reports that approximately 400,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced since the ceasefire ended, contributing to the alarming statistics that indicate over 90 percent of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been uprooted since the onset of military operations on October 7, 2023. In total, more than 50,000 Palestinians lost their lives, with the international community expressing growing concern over these humanitarian developments.
