The recent earthquake unleashed chaotic conditions in both Myanmar and Thailand, causing buildings to collapse and infrastructure to fail. Notable damage occurred in Mandalay, where historic structures and key transportation routes were compromised, and reports indicated casualties and injuries among construction workers in Bangkok, whose high-rise under construction was impacted.

The earthquake struck at a shallow depth of approximately ten kilometers (six miles), a condition that typically amplifies potential damage. With Myanmar’s rapid urbanization and increase in high-rise buildings constructed from reinforced materials, concerns regarding building codes and resilience to such quakes are paramount.

Experts predict that as the situation evolves, the death toll in Myanmar could surge. The United States Geological Survey estimates that nearly 800,000 individuals may have experienced severe shaking during the earthquake, emphasizing the urgent need for international support and aid in the recovery process.
