Zelenskyy Expresses Caution Over Proposed New US Minerals Deal for Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that his administration is currently evaluating a newly proposed agreement that aims to grant the United States access to Ukraine’s vital mineral reserves. This proposal differs considerably from an earlier draft presented to Ukrainian officials, according to information reported by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

During a press conference in Kyiv, Zelenskyy highlighted the significance of the updated proposal, which has been formally submitted to his office. He stated that it will be meticulously compared against previous outlines discussed with Deputy Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko during bilateral talks with US representatives. Zelenskyy underlined the importance of understanding the new framework thoroughly before proceeding with further discussions.

Additionally, President Zelenskyy made it clear that Ukraine does not recognize previously sanctioned US military aid to his country as loans that require repayment. He expressed gratitude for the support but emphasized the necessity of distinguishing this assistance from financial credit obligations. This assertion comes in the context of a recent diplomatic rift between Ukraine and the US, following tensions with former President Trump’s administration, which led to the suspension of previously agreed-upon military assistance and halting of intelligence sharing.

The current geopolitical climate poses a complex challenge for Zelenskyy, especially as negotiations for peace have become increasingly sensitive. Trump’s efforts to expedite conflict resolution with Russia have shifted the narrative, often aligning with Moscow’s perspectives on the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Concerning potential dialogues with Russian officials, Zelenskyy indicated a willingness to engage with representatives who present a genuine framework for peace—while firmly rejecting any discussions with President Vladimir Putin. This statement follows Putin’s controversial proposal to establish external governance over Ukraine as part of peace negotiations, an idea that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly rejected, affirming Ukraine’s legitimate government must be respected.

As diplomatic efforts continue and perspectives on both sides shift, the situation remains precarious. An outcome that ensures both stability for Ukraine and a credible pathway towards lasting peace is paramount in these negotiations.
