China has released five employees from the Mintz Group, a United States-based due diligence firm, after they had spent nearly two years in detention. The company expressed its gratitude toward Chinese authorities for their release, marking a significant development in the relationship between foreign businesses and China’s regulatory landscape.
The detention of these five local staff members occurred in March 2023, coinciding with a broader crackdown on foreign consultancy and due diligence firms, which also targeted notable companies such as Bain & Company and Capvision Partners. This series of events reflects China’s commitment to enforcing its regulations on foreign operations, particularly in sensitive sectors.
In conjunction with their release, China’s National Bureau of Statistics had imposed a fine of .5 million on Mintz Group over allegations of conducting “foreign-related statistical investigations” without the necessary approvals. Such regulatory actions underscore China’s intent to streamline its foreign business environment while also emphasizing compliance with local laws.
“We understand that the Mintz Group Beijing employees who were detained, all Chinese nationals, have now all been released,” a spokesperson for Mintz Group confirmed in a statement. The firm expressed relief that its former colleagues could reunite with their families after their prolonged detainment.
This release coincides with the conclusion of the China Development Forum, an important platform for advancing the country’s appeal to foreign investors. The recent forum attracted numerous high-profile business leaders, including Tim Cook of Apple, Albert Bourla from Pfizer, and Amin Nasser of Saudi Aramco, highlighting China’s strategic efforts to foster international business relations.
During the forum, Chinese Premier Li Qiang emphasized the importance of expanding market access for foreign investors. He urged global firms to resist the growing trend of protectionism, advocating for a more open and interconnected marketplace. “In today’s increasingly fragmented world with rising instability and uncertainty, it is more necessary for countries to open up their markets and enterprises… to resist risks and challenges,” Li stated.
Mintz Group specializes in background checks and investigations related to fraud and workplace misconduct, employing over 280 investigators across 12 offices globally. The company’s broader mission integrates with the growing trend of compliance and ethical practices in international business, reflecting an evolving landscape where cooperation and adherence to local laws are paramount.
