Israel has reportedly destroyed the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital, Gaza’s only specialized cancer treatment facility, a move that has drawn widespread condemnation from international observers. The demolition, executed by Israeli military forces, occurred amid ongoing military operations in the region and raises significant concerns under international humanitarian law, which prohibits the targeting of medical facilities.

The explosion, which devastated the hospital located in central Gaza, followed a series of Israeli airstrikes that had already inflicted severe damage to the facility since early October 2023. Online footage depicted a large fireball and clouds of smoke emerging from the site, marking another escalation in the conflict. As Israel announced an expansion of military operations in the vicinity, movement on nearby roads was reportedly restricted, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the densely populated territory.

The destruction of the hospital has left thousands of cancer patients in Gaza without critical medical care. With the facility already affected by fuel shortages, which led to its closure on November 1, 2023, the United Nations issued warnings regarding the precarious conditions faced by 70 patients dependent on treatment. Tragically, reports have emerged of at least four fatalities attributed to the lack of access to necessary medical care amid the ongoing conflict.

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the demolition as a “deliberate” act aimed at furthering Israel’s strategy of creating uninhabitable conditions in Gaza and displacing the Palestinian population. It called upon the international community to take decisive action to address these unlawful attacks.

The Gaza Ministry of Health echoed these sentiments, condemning Israeli actions as part of a broader pattern of systematic destruction targeting healthcare infrastructure, which they view as contributing to a larger narrative of aggression against the Palestinian people. As the largest cancer treatment facility in Gaza, the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital was vital for the care of up to 30,000 patients annually.

Tragically, reports indicate that at al-Ahli Arab Hospital, also known as the Baptist Hospital, several children were pronounced dead following airstrikes in northern Gaza, illustrating the devastating impact of continued military operations on civilian life. As the situation escalates, diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire are underway, with leading European nations urging the United States to facilitate the resumption of humanitarian corridors.

The international community remains focused on advocating for peace and stability in the region, emphasizing the need for adequate humanitarian support for those affected by the conflict.
