Former world heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman passed away at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy that spans his remarkable athletic career, his devout religious faith, and his achievements as a businessman. Foreman’s family announced his passing on social media, revealing that he died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.

The statement from his family highlighted his qualities as “a devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand- and great-grandfather,” emphasizing a life filled with unwavering faith, humility, and purpose. Recognized not only as a humanitarian and two-time heavyweight champion but also as a respected Olympian, Foreman made significant contributions to society throughout his life. He was known for his discipline, conviction, and his commitment to preserving his legacy, which was particularly focused on his family.

Born in Marshall, Texas, in 1949, Foreman’s early life was marked by adversity. His family relocated to Houston, where they faced the challenges of growing up in a segregated community. Despite dropping out of junior high school, Foreman turned his struggles into motivation, channeling his potential into boxing after joining the Job Corps, a program initiated under President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society” reforms.

Foreman’s boxing career skyrocketed at the young age of 19 when he clinched the heavyweight boxing gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. His transition to professional boxing was notable, with Foreman winning his first heavyweight championship in 1973 against Joe Frazier. However, his first title defense against Muhammad Ali in the historic “Rumble in the Jungle” in 1974 marked a turning point, as he faced a significant setback with his loss to Ali.

Following the defeat, Foreman took time away from the sport, during which he became an ordained minister. His commitment to youth development led him to establish a youth center in Texas. Upon his return to boxing in the 1980s, he won an impressive 24 consecutive matches before a loss to Evander Holyfield in 1991. Remarkably, at the age of 45, Foreman made history by knocking out the undefeated Michael Moorer, which earned him the title of the oldest heavyweight champion.

Beyond his boxing accolades, Foreman achieved tremendous success as the face of the George Foreman Grill, an innovative cooking appliance that revolutionized home cooking. The grill sold over 100 million units, proving to be a lucrative venture that surpassed his earnings in boxing.

Foreman is survived by his five sons, all named George, along with five biological daughters and two adopted daughters. His enduring legacy as an athlete, preacher, and businessman continues to inspire many.
