The Israeli army announced on Wednesday that its forces took back control of the center of the Netzarim Corridor. This move aims to expand a security zone, creating a partial buffer between the northern and southern regions of Gaza. Previously, Israeli troops had withdrawn from this corridor, allowing civilians in the central and southern parts of the Strip to return to their homes following extended conflict.
Hani Mahmoud, a correspondent for ZezapTV based in Gaza City, highlighted that the reoccupation of the Netzarim Corridor significantly restricts the movement of Palestinians within the enclave, equating the Israeli military presence to a ground invasion. Mahmoud emphasized the military’s statement, indicating that this action serves as a foundation for forthcoming military operations in the area.
The renewed ground maneuvers coincide with intensified airstrikes in Gaza, which have reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 400 individuals in just one day. Israeli authorities have accused Hamas of refusing a modified ceasefire proposal that would have included the release of many of the 59 remaining captives believed to be held in Gaza, predominantly presumed deceased. To compel Hamas to accept the newly offered ceasefire terms, Israeli officials earlier this month halted all aid deliveries and reduced electricity supplies to the region.
In response to these developments, Hamas maintains that Israel should adhere to the original ceasefire established in January. This agreement outlined the terms for negotiations regarding the remaining captives, a permanent halt to hostilities, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. Taher al-Nono, a media adviser for Hamas’ political leadership, criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for deviating from the agreement, stating that international parties are poised to intervene as guarantors of the original terms.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a warning on Wednesday, threatening to escalate military operations unless all captives are liberated and Hamas is decisively dealt with. He asserted that Israel would respond with unprecedented intensity if necessary.
Gaza’s health authorities reported an alarming increase in fatalities due to ongoing airstrikes, including the tragic loss of a foreign UN staff member at a UN facility in central Gaza. Medical personnel in the region continue to grapple with overwhelming numbers of casualties and wounded individuals, exacerbated by the challenges posed by the renewed Israeli blockade.
