On a significant diplomatic mission, Canada’s newly inaugurated Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Paris to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron. In addition to trade discussions, Macron and Carney expressed solidarity in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty amid ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Macron characterized France and Canada as “peaceful powers” committed to assisting Ukraine and advocating for definitive commitments from Russia to ensure lasting peace and stability in Europe.

This summit follows a recent video conference organized by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer among countries supportive of Ukraine, where discussions centered on creating a “coalition of the willing” to reinforce peace initiatives. Reports indicate that Carney has invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the upcoming Group of Seven (G7) summit in Alberta this summer, reinforcing Canada’s active role on the global stage.

Looking ahead, Carney is scheduled to visit the United Kingdom for discussions with Prime Minister Starmer and King Charles III. While no plans for a Washington visit have been confirmed, Carney maintains an openness to engaging with President Trump, provided that Canada’s sovereignty is respected.
