Gaza City – On October 19, a group of displaced Palestinians took shelter at Hamad School in Beit Lahiya, as the situation in northern Gaza remains dire. Amal al-Masri, a new mother, found herself in an alarming situation when the sound of encircling Israeli tanks and hovering quadcopters filled the early morning air. “At dawn, we heard the tanks, and the quadcopters began to instruct everyone to evacuate,” she recounted, highlighting the anxiety and fear that loomed over this community.

Throughout the previous night, residents endured intense shelling, leaving adults fearful and children in tears. Amal lived in a ground-floor classroom with her husband Yousef, their five children—Tala, Honda, Assad, and Omar—ages ranging from four to eleven, and Yousef’s elderly father, Jamil. Amidst the chaos, unity prevailed as the family prayed together, hoping to find safety amidst the turmoil.

As the morning progressed, the atmosphere turned chaotic when armed forces instructed men, women, and children to separate. Yousef, along with other men and older boys, was directed to the school gate for inspection while Amal remained with their children. “They ordered us to line up and approach a camera which I believe was using facial recognition technology,” Yousef said, relating the harrowing experiences of men gathered together, held under tense circumstances.

The situation escalated quickly as Yousef and other men were taken to a makeshift pit dug by heavy machinery, where they were detained and treated harshly. Despite these challenging circumstances, Yousef’s concern for his family motivated him to endure the mounting stress as he heard the sounds of shelling and chaos surrounding him.

After several days filled with uncertainty, Yousef was forced to navigate the perilous environment alongside soldiers, ordered to check buildings for potential threats. Yet, it was a day of unexpected resolve when he determined to escape and find out if his family was safe.

During the evacuation, Yousef was shot but managed to be transported to al-Ahli Arab Hospital for medical attention, showcasing his resilience. Meanwhile, Amal, having braved the ordeal of relocating with her children, made it to the hospital, where the family was reunited. Throughout their ordeal, the family’s strength remained unwavering, symbolized by their newborn daughter, Sumoud, whose name translates to “steadfastness,” encapsulating their enduring spirit amid adversity.

This story of hope, family, and resilience reflects the strength of the Palestinian community in navigating profound challenges. The shared experiences of individuals in Gaza highlight the enduring commitment to unite under the most trying circumstances for the sake of family and collective identity.
