Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, the CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX, continues to affirm his commitment to maintaining internet connectivity for Ukraine, despite a recent exchange of sharp words with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. The dispute centered around Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service, which plays a crucial role in supporting Ukraine during its ongoing conflict with Russia.
During a social media discussion on the platform X, Sikorski expressed concerns over Starlink’s reliability, suggesting that Poland, which subsidizes Ukraine’s access to the service at an annual cost of approximately million, might need to explore alternative internet providers. This statement echoed Musk’s assertion that without Starlink, the Ukrainian military’s effectiveness would markedly decline. In support of Musk, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the tech billionaire’s position, dismissing Sikorski’s comments as unfounded. Rubio contended that without Starlink, the situation in Ukraine would have been significantly more precarious. He stated, “Without Starlink, Ukraine would have lost this war long ago and Russians would be on the border with Poland right now.”
Subsequently, Musk directly addressed Sikorski, reiterating his commitment to Ukraine by stating firmly: “To be extremely clear, no matter how much I disagree with the Ukraine policy, Starlink will never turn off its terminals.” He emphasized that the functionality of Starlink is indispensable, given the Russian military’s ability to disrupt other communication channels.
Moreover, approximately half of the estimated 42,000 Starlink terminals operational in Ukraine have been financed by Poland. These terminals have proven essential for military operations and crucial services, particularly in the aftermath of extensive damage to Ukraine’s communication infrastructure caused by the Russian invasion, which intensified in February 2022.
